Al Hassan Issah (b. 1993 - ) is a contemporary Ghanaian, Kumasi-based visual artist whose innovative practice seamlessly integrates painting, sculpture, drawing, architecture, and metalworking—challenging traditional notions of painting by transforming two-dimensional surfaces into interactive, three-dimensional experiences. His exploration of materiality is evident in his use of diverse media, including steel pipes, cast aluminum, iron rods, plywood, and fabrics. This approach reflects his deep engagement with materials' physicality and commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
Al Hassan holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. His academic journey has been complemented by his involvement with blaxTARLINES KUMASI, a contemporary art collective known for its experimental approach and commitment to redefining art in Ghana. Additionally, Al Hassan is the Director of Laborlatory Studios, where he collaborates with local artisans, including welders, blacksmiths, and carpenters, fostering a community-based approach to artmaking.
His work has been featured in several solo and group exhibitions in Ghana and abroad, including in Marrakech, Morocco; Masaka, Uganda; New York, USA; London, UK; Berlin and Düsseldorf, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Brussels, Belgium; and Roubaix, France.
